Mental Health First Aid is so important. With 1 in 5 Australians experiencing a mental illness of some kind every year, statistically, we are sure to be working with one or more clients or colleagues who are experiencing a mental health issue, right now.
In the VET Sector, we are 100% focussed on our client's goals and helping them achieve as much as they can. We want them to be successful and in a learning setting, we want them to be engaged and productive.
Equipping ourselves with Mental Health First Aid skills is essential. These skills allow us to open up difficult conversations where we feel someone may be experiencing a mental health issue, and assist them to get professional assistance for their mental health issue.
Why complete a Mental Health First Aid course?
We in the VET sector have a huge responsibility to our students, and our colleagues. As VET professionals, we are in an excellent position to assist someone experiencing a Mental Health issue, whether that is a student, a colleague, an employer, or one of the other many stakeholders we interact with.
Because we work in high rapport with our clients, we are likely able to notice signs that may indicate our client is experiencing a mental health concern, and take steps to support that person.
An unaddressed Mental Health issue can have a significant effect on a person's ability to perform at their best. For learners, their learning and progression can be affected. For our colleagues, our effectiveness and general wellbeing may suffer.
By taking steps early to encourage the person to get support, we are ensuring their effective and speedy recovery, and their return to their usual levels of productivity.

Mental Health First Aid is an essential skill for all "people people"
It's our belief at AVETMESS that having Mental Health First Aid skills is something one should have, at any level in an organisation.
In this video, Melissa, a HR Business Partner at Coca Cola Amatil, explains how she came to be a Mental Health First Aider, and why she believes the skills are so important for people in similar roles to hers.
Would you know how to help?
Mental health problems can affect anyone in the community and inaccurate and stigmatising attitudes towards people with mental illness are common.
Many people lack the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support a student, friend, family member or co-worker experiencing a mental health problem, including how to approach someone and start a safe conversation. This is a very common and normal phenomenon.
Many people we work with have said they have experienced times where they have felt 'something isn't right' or that they thought their client or friend may be experiencing a mental illness, but have not know how to start the conversation.
The Mental Health First Aid course teaches you exactly how to have those conversations.
Become a Mental Health First Aider
Learning the skills to help someone who is experiencing a mental health problem is simple.
The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course teaches you simple, practical first aid skills for helping a client, family member, friend, co-worker or other person who is experiencing mental health problems.
MHFA courses will teach you how to listen and respond to someone with a mental health problem, even if they are experiencing a crisis. You’ll learn how to help someone to access the support they might need for the successful management of symptoms as part of their recovery journey.
What’s more, you’ll be able to actively reduce stigma in your community and your workplace, by responding appropriately to myths and misunderstandings about mental illness.
